Abstract
Titanium and titanium alloys have been extensively used in the medical and dental fields because of their good corrosion resistance, high strength to density ratio and specially, low elastic modulus compared to other metallic materials. However, the toxicity of alloying elements has been disputed. It appears that small amounts of metal ion or element, released in the human body. In this study, Ti-Ag-Au ternary alloys were made by the introduction of 0.5~2.0 at% Au (TAA 05, 10, 15, 20), as a third element, into Ti-2at%Ag alloy (TAA 00). The microstructure and XRD analysis to identify formed phase by added third element were investigated. In order to assess for the use of dental application, hardness test for evaluating mechanical properties, and componential analysis and corrosion resistance test were carried out, respectively. The hardness were improved with increasing Au content. In all the alloys, the weight loss per unit area showed less value than 0.01 §·/§². In case of TAA 20, the highest corrosion resistance was appeared as the value of 0.0008 §·/§². As a result of cytotoxicity test, TAA 05, TAA 10 and TAA 15 showed similar with TAA 00. In case of TAA 20, the lower cell viability was observed to compare with the TAA 00, but there was no significant difference (p>0.05). As shown the above results, Ti-Ag-Au ternary alloys were assessed to be applicable for the dental field.
